AUGUST 18 IN INDIAN HISTORY_STAY UPDATE

18-August-1800  Fort William College was established at Calcutta.

      Fort William College (also called the College of Fort William) was an academy and learning centre of Oriental studies established by Lord Wellesley, then Governor-General of British India.

18-August-1900  Vijayalakshmi Pandit, first woman President of U.N.O. General Assembly, was born

18-August-1945  Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose left Saigon and is believed to have died in a Japanese aeroplane crash at Taihoku Airport in Taiwan.

            On 18th August 1945 it was reported that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was seriously injured and badly burned in a plane crash in Taihoku airport, Taiwan and is believed to have passed away in a nearby Japanese military hospital.

Indian Institute of Technology was opened in Kharagpur, West Bengal.


  The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous public institutes of higher education, located in India. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared them as institutions of national importance, and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance etc.

18-August-1957  Tilak Raj was appointed the Narcotics Commissioner of India. He headed his office for four years till 6th September, 1961.

18-August-1993  The Transport Development Council decides to abolish Pathkar (entry tax) and increase the fee for national permit from Rs. 1500 to Rs. 5000.

18-August-1995  Parvati Giri, also called the Little Mother Teresa, died in Orissa. She was 69. She was a social worker and had taken part during the Quit India movement.
